Mugshot Generator: best photos and fixes.

Selfies that work

A clear, front-facing selfie with even light gives the most convincing result, because a booking photo is straight on by nature. Your hair, glasses and the top of your clothes are kept, so the joke still lands as you. Photos taken from below or with the head turned can still work, but the face is redrawn facing forward, which can change your likeness a little.

Writing on the letter board

Leave the instructions empty and no board or text is added. To add one, write the line: "board says: ATE ALL THE COOKIES". Short lines of two to five words fit best and are spelled exactly; longer text may get cramped or misspelled. Joke charges, a nickname or a party date all work well.

Color or black and white

Color gives the modern look, with harsh flash and slightly greenish fluorescent light. Black & white gives the 1950s look: grainy, high contrast and a bit faded, perfect for mid-century and film-noir costumes. For a pair, such as a couple's costume, use the same look for both photos so they match.

Keep it a joke

Use your own photo or a friend's who is in on the joke. A realistic booking photo of someone could be mistaken for a real arrest record, so never post one of a person who hasn't agreed, never use one to accuse anyone, and don't present it as real. No real police logos or agency names are added.

Expression

Booking photos are famous for blank or annoyed stares, so the expression is made neutral or slightly grumpy. If you want a smile for a funnier result, write "smiling broadly" in the instructions. Some of the best party photos come from an obvious grin against the serious background.
