Descriptions that give good maps

Describe the shape of the world first, then its regions: "a long northern continent, a ring of islands in the south, a mountain spine down the middle". Then add a few named places and where they are. Directions such as north, south, east and west help place things. Geography follows real logic, so rivers run from mountains to the sea and deserts sit away from coasts, unless you describe something stranger on purpose.

Place names and labels

Only the names you write are labeled, spelled exactly as you give them; without names the map has no text, which is useful if you want to add labels in your own font. Five or six names fit well. Long lists of towns make the labels small and crowded. Short, distinctive names read best; for many places, generate a clean map and label it yourself in an editor.

Choosing a style

Parchment is the classic novel map: sepia ink, hatched mountains and little tree symbols on aged paper. Watercolor gives a soft atlas look with color for sea and land. Game map is colorful and bold, with a slight 3D feel, good for strategy and role-playing games. Custom accepts any style, such as "old nautical chart", "elven silver ink on dark blue" or "sci-fi holographic map".

Working from your own sketch

Upload a rough sketch, even a photo of a pencil drawing or a quick paint scribble, and the map follows its coastlines and layout while adding detail and style. Mark mountains, forests and cities with simple symbols; words written on the sketch may be read as place names. This is the best way to keep the shape you already have in mind for your world.

Regions and city maps

The same tool can draw a smaller area: describe "a regional map of one kingdom" or "a map of a single valley with three villages". For a city layout, describe streets, walls, a river and districts; city maps get busy quickly, so keep them simple. For battle maps with a grid, write "top-down battle map with a square grid", though it is drawn rather than measured.
